Bulgarian U-21 Football Team Humbled against Montenegro
Bulgaria's under-21 national team was humiliated in its first European qualifying match with Montenegro on Tuesday, losing to Montenegro 2-1 at home.
In their first official match since the split from Serbia, Montenegro was on the back foot for much of the game, as the crossbar saved them twice from a certain goal.
But with Bulgaria creating a multitude of chances and then failing to convert them, Montenegro won a penalty kick in the 38th minute, but Vuckovic missed.
With the hosts more willing to sit back in the second half, Montenegro seized its clearest chances to go ahead 1-0 in the 50th minute as Vuckovic atoned for his earlier miss, while Jovetic made it 2-0 in the 66th minute.
Bulgaria made their comeback task even harder two minutes later after Gadzhev saw red for his second yellow-card offense.
Bulgaria managed to pull one goal back in added time through Orlin Orlinov, but facing opposition from England, Portugal and Ireland, its chances to qualify for the 2009 Under-21 European Championship look small.
