Rubens Barrichello has jokingly suggested that Nico Rosberg should escape from being team-mate to Michael Schumacher this season as the 7-time World Champion returns to Formula 1 to join his compatriot at Mercedes GP.

Barrichello was partnered alongside Schumacher for six seasons from the start of the new millennium; having been beaten by his team-mate for all years of his Ferrari career before finally disagreeing with the team's policy to favour one driver, Barrichello rated Rosberg's chances in Valencia on Monday.

"Get out of there!" Williams driver Rubens laughed with reporters. "That's the only thing I can tell him really! Knowing what I know - and especially after seeing how fast Michael was today - it's going to be a tough job. I wish him all the best because I think he's a talented guy who can become a Champion."

With the Mercedes MGP W01 having been shared by the two Germans on Monday, Rosberg is the only driver to enjoy the car today before Schumacher begins his full day of running on Wednesday.

Ross Brawn has painted a clear picture as to what made Michael Schumacher a seven-times Champion in contrast to current title -holder Jenson Button.


All that was required was Schumacher's 90 minutes of track time on Monday as he made his long-awaited comeback after more than three years in retirement.


For Mercedes GP boss Brawn, the technical guru behind all of 41- year-old Schumacher's Championships, he admitted it was a return to the good old days.

Schumacher claimed he felt like a kid with a new toy following his first serious outing in a Formula One car since the Brazilian Grand Prix of 2006.


Brawn described the first day of testing of the Mercedes as "okay," which was hardly a ringing endorsement of the new 'Silver Arrow'.


However, working with Schumacher again at least brought memories flooding back, and a realisation if improvements need to be made, the German is the man to help make them.


"He was very enthusiastic, and it was good to see that enthusiasm," said Brawn of Schumacher, who finished third quickest at the end of the day behind former Ferrari team-mate Felipe Massa.


"It would have been more of a surprise if he hadn't been where he was, so it was confirmation of what we both thought - that he should be competitive."


Reflecting on Schumacher's strengths compared to those of Button and his Brawn GP team-mate of last season in Rubens Barrichello, Brawn's response was unequivocal.

"What came through was Michael's precision about what's going on in the car, what he wants and what he feels is needed," added Brawn.


"He has great clarity of reasoning in what he does, what he feels and what he thinks should be the direction we take or changes to come.


"That's always been notable about Michael in his career, and that's probably the most noticeable difference.

"Both Rubens and Jenson gave very good information on the car, and that was never a problem. It's just that Michael is more precise in his opinions as to what is happening. That's nice to work with again. It was a bit like the old days."


With team-mate Nico Rosberg in the car for today's second day at the Ricardo Tormo circuit in Valencia, Schumacher will enjoy a full day of running on Wednesday.

That is likely when he will begin his methodical analysis of a car he will naturally hope can carry him to an eighth title.


For now, following his 40 laps on Monday, Schumacher left the track in a positive mood.


"At the moment he is fairly happy with the car, and has not really pinpointed any areas we need to work on," added Brawn.

"But I'm sure as he gets into it more and starts to find the limits of the car more, then he may have stronger opinions on the areas we need to improve.

"We're all optimistic, and I'm sure he is, that there is still a lot more to come.


"He hasn't driven a Formula One car seriously for three years, so it was pretty encouraging."

Michael Schumacher might have lapped a competitive third-quickest on his return to F1 testing action on the opening day in Valencia this week – indeed, fleetingly a staggering four seconds faster than anybody else until it transpired that he had cut the chicane in order to achieve that time – but fears remain about the state of the seven-time world champion's neck after his personal doctor was spotted in the paddock.

Schumacher completed 40 laps of the Circuit Ricardo Tormo in the Spanish city on Monday afternoon, and lopped a full six tenths of a second off the earlier best effort of Mercedes Grand Prix team-mate and compatriot Nico Rosberg, though the younger German was admittedly running on a heavy fuel load and struggling with a less-than-ideal driving position inside the new W01.

The record-breaking Kerpen-born native was forced to abandon plans to temporarily substitute former Ferrari team-mate Felipe Massa in the wake of the Brazilian's life-threatening Hungaroring qualifying accident last summer, after a recurring neck injury – the legacy of a motorcycling fall at Cartagena in Spain twelve months ago – came back to haunt him.

Upon agreeing terms for a three-year contract with reigning double F1 World Champions Mercedes in December – to make what has been billed as the greatest comeback in sporting history – Schumacher insisted that his neck was no longer an issue, but the presence of both his personal doctor Johannes Peil and physiotherapist Kai Schnapka has cast fresh doubt upon that conviction, particularly given that the physical stresses and strains of a grand prix race distance are somewhat more demanding than 40 laps around a testing track. Some reports even alluded to 'secret tests' taking place later that evening.

“I'm superstitious, so we will have to wait and see,” Dr. Peil told Sportsmail, before adding in an interview with German news agency DPA: “He is now back to the normal cycle and can train to the normal extent. He can concentrate on driving again.”

The 41-year-old himself appeared far from concerned about his fitness, insisting: “I feel very good. I have worked very well, prepared myself extremely precisely – and this is the result.”

The seven time world champion's friend and former teammate Felipe Massa revealed that Schumacher, 41, stopped by for lunch during the break from testing at the Valencia circuit.
"What we said to each other? Nothing in particular," said the 28-year-old Brazilian.
"We're friends and we're talking quite often to each other: today I think he was just homesick for our motor home, because we have the better food here than anywhere else in the world of formula one," Massa smiled.
Ferrari confirmed that Schumacher ate a plate of spaghetti aglio, olio and peperoncino prepared by the team's famous chef Carmine.
Italy's La Gazzetta dello Sport reported that Schumacher brought along his doctor Johannes Peil.
"Ferrari has already won over Mercedes in the culinary challenge," said the newspaper.
Massa would not be drawn on how the new Ferrari and Mercedes cars shape up, but third party Rubens Barrichello admitted after Tuesday's running: "Ferrari seemed very good."
