1 July 2017 – Three-time F1 World Champion Sir Jackie Stewart believes Sebastian Vettel was "irresponsible" in his contact with Lewis Hamilton at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, but reckons the German was "provoked" by his rival.

As the field prepared for a restart at Baku, Vettel hit the rear of Hamilton exiting Turn 15, before gesticulating, drawing level, and making side-on-side contact.

Vettel was issued with a 10-second stop/go penalty, before going on to place fourth, while the FIA will "further examine" the incident on Monday.

Stewart reckons Vettel's mind management "wasn't working" during the clash but suggested Hamilton had deliberately used tactics in a bid to unsettle his rival.

"There is no doubt in my opinion that Vettel was completely wrong, I mean, irresponsible in colliding with Lewis," Stewart told The Flying Lap.

"Whether that was a moment of anger, or whatever it may have been, it was still not correct.

"However, there's another side to that which I think is more important.

"The reason that it happened was that Lewis either lifted off completely from the gas pedal or brushed the brakes at a time when no racing driver behind the leader would have expected anybody to do that it.

"Therefore, Vettel, even with the fast reaction of an F1 world champion of four times, still ran into the back of Lewis, not by any intention at all, but by the fact that it was such a severe retardation while he, and every other driver for that matter, were ready to accelerate down the straight because the pace car had already kind of disappeared.

2017 F1: Red Bull says loss of oil 'trick' hurt Ferrari


Speculation is increasing that a technical controversy is behind Ferrari's sudden dip in form.

The Italian team was riding a wave of form this year until the last two races in Canada and Baku.





One suggestion is that an FIA clampdown about the adding of oil to fuel was specifically targeted against Ferrari.

"There is someone who is now with the silver team that came from the red team and knew what to look for," Red Bull team boss is quoted by Osterreich newspaper.

The implication is that Mercedes raised the alarm about the 'trick' Ferrari system.

However, Dr Helmut Marko thinks Sebastian Vettel is still the 2017 title favourite.

"Even though Ferrari apparently lost some engine power due to the oil in the fuel story, Sebastian is the strongest in the races," the Red Bull official told Kronen Zeitung.
