2014 BMW M6 Gran Coupe Rendered

July 23, 2012 at 12:40pm by Alexander Stoklosa

Presenting the 2014 BMW M6 Gran Coupe! OK, we present a rendering of what we think the M-badged Gran Coupe will look like. Up to this point, only camo’d versions of the M6 GC have been seen, but BMW recently confirmed the model for U.S. sales in 2013 and so we thought we’d provide an early peek at the car.

As you might expect, the M6 Gran Coupe will get M-specific wheels, aggressive fascias with bigger intakes up front, and M5/M6 hardware underneath. That means a 560-hp twin-turbocharged V-8, a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, and rear-wheel drive. A carbon-fiber roof panel, like those on the M3 and M6 coupes, is a possibility for the M6 Gran Coupe—and it’s depicted in our illustration—but we’ll have to wait and see whether BMW decides to officially adopt the woven lid.

Given its close relationship to the M5, it’s possible that the M6 GC will have steering, ride, and braking shortcomings similar to those we noted from the über-5er during its recent third-of-three comparison-test finish. If our rendering is accurate, at least the M6 Gran Coupe will look fantastic.

2013 BMW 7-series Range Priced; New ActiveHybrid 7 Much More Affordable

July 23, 2012 at 2:20pm by Alexander Stoklosa

BMW’s biggest sedan, the 7-series, was comprehensively updated for 2013 and now we’ve got pricing info on the entire 7er lineup. The 7 enters this new model year with tweaked six- and eight-cylinder engines, a new eight-speed automatic, and a refocused ActiveHybrid 7 model. (We’ve previously laid out the changes to the ActiveHybrid 7 and the rest of the 7-series lineup.) Besides both the six-cylinder 740i and eight-cylinder 750i gaining more power—the twelve-cylinder 760i went unchanged—BMW also added an all-wheel-drive model to the 740i line. As expected, every 2013 7-series costs more than last year—with the exception of the ActiveHybrid 7. Significantly, the hybrid sees a massive price cut relative to the 2011 version—the hybrid took a yearlong hiatus for 2012. Full pricing info below:

    • 740i: $74,195
    • 740Li: $78,195
    • 740Li xDrive: $81,195
    • ActiveHybrid 7: $84,895
    • 750i: $87,195
    • 750i xDrive: $90,195
    • 750Li: $90,895
    • 750Li xDrive: $93,895
    • 760Li: $140,200

Overall, the modest price increases year-over-year for the non-hybrid 2013 7-series accurately reflect the added value BMW built in, but the ActiveHybrid 7’s pricing is pretty interesting. The first ActiveHybrid 7 was positioned similarly to the Lexus LS600h hybrid, with the electric assist intended to give the eight-cylinder sedan the power of a V-12 but with V-8 fuel economy. For 2013, BMW ditched the original system for the same setup used in the smaller2012 ActiveHybrid 5, which promises to be more efficient.

The switch from a V-8–based hybrid system to a six-cylinder-based one also brings a switch in the 2013 ActiveHybrid 7’s placement within the 7er lineup. Last year, both regular and long-wheelbase versions of the ActiveHybrid 7 were available, starting at $97,895 and $101,895, respectively. This year, the ActiveHybrid 7 is available only in long-wheelbase form and pricing begins at $84,895, placing it between the six-cylinder 740i and the 750i. It’s worth noting that the ActiveHybrid 5 shares an identical spot in between the six- and eight-cylinder models in the 5-series lineup; the new ActiveHybrid 3 is something of an anomaly and is priced higher than all non-M 3-series.Look for the 2013 7-series to begin hitting dealerships soon. Buyers looking for more sportiness can indulge in thealso-refreshed 2013 Alpina B7, which is priced quite a bit higher than the regular 7, but also gets a ton of built-in, psuedo-M7-like upgrades.

    2013 BMW ActiveHybrid 3

The 3-series hybrid is refined, but a four-cylinder system would make more sense.

Like all of the German carmakers, BMW has a preference for diesel power over hybrids in the search for improved fuel efficiency. But America—a pretty huge market, as you may have noticed—is crazy for gas-electrics, as are parts of Asia, so the Bavarians have spun off hybrid versions of their mainstream sedans. The ActiveHybrid 3—or “3-series hybrid” to those who prefer nomenclature that’s not fairly dripping with marketing goo—uses BMW’s 300-hp, 3.0-liter, turbocharged six, coupled to a ZF eight-speed automatic in which the torque converter has been replaced by a 54-hp electric motor. Add a clutch between the electric motor and the internal-combustion engine and you’ve got all of the go bits. It’s the same gasoline-electric system in the ActiveHybrid 5, and it also is being adopted for therepositioned 2013 ActiveHybrid 7.

    Batteries Included
Power for the electric motor comes from a 1.3-kWh lithium-ion battery pack made from 96 cylindrical cells from supplier A123 Systems; the stack is mounted below the trunk floor. The 317-volt battery, which weighs 101 pounds with its internal cooling apparatus, also can power the electric air conditioning compressor. Feeding juice into the battery pack is the work of the electric motor, which acts as a generator during braking and coasting. A pair of conventional 12-volt batteries also is aboard; one is devoted to energizing the engine starter, the other to various other electrical systems that include the electric power steering and the brakes.

The gasoline engine and electric motor produce a combined output of 335 ponies, as well as 332 lb-ft of torque—35 and 32 more than developed by the conventionally powered 335i. However, all of the hybrid’s hardware puts it 298 pounds above a 335i sedan, and the green-leaning car’s final-drive ratio has been lengthened from 3.15 to 2.81 in search of fuel economy.
Not Slow—But Not Terribly Efficient, Either
As a result, we estimate the 3-series hybrid will hustle to 60 in five seconds flat—not slow by any means, but a tenth off BMW’s own claim for a 2013 335i automatic. (The 2013 335i auto will be recalibrated for less torque interruption during shifts compared to the 2012. We also typically find BMW acceleration estimates to be conservative.) At 33 mpg, highway fuel economy is unchanged from our benchmark 335i automatic, but city mpg climbs up two to 25. A 328i can achieve as high as 23/34. We’re curious to see what we measure in real-world driving with the hybrid.
We can report for now that the 3 hybrid goes about its fuel-saving business very smoothly and unobtrusively. The car doesn’t employ significant regenerative braking, so only a sensitive driver will notice the slight nonlinear feel to the pedal action. Despite the taller gearing, the transmission doesn’t have to downshift much thanks to the extra torque of the electric motor, so the hybridized 3 doesn’t seem to have to work to deliver its power.
As a full hybrid, it can run for a time solely on its electric motor, and we did so regularly as we drove through German villages, where the speed limit is 31 mph. With a fully charged battery pack, the 3 hybrid can traverse a maximum of 2.5 miles on electrons alone at speeds up to 44 mph on a level road. But the electric motor actually will propel the car up to 100 mph on a long downhill run, so long as the driver has selected the car’s Eco Pro mode. On the highway, when you ease off the accelerator, the gasoline engine stops and declutches from the transmission, allowing the car to roll along silently, and one gets the sense that there’s really no friction occurring anywhere. It’s what BMW calls “coasting”— the VW Group prefers “sailing” for its hybrids—and it’s one more way to squeeze more distance from each drop of fuel.

Navigation is optional on the 3-series hybrid; if you’ve ponied up, once you program a destination into the system, it will monitor the topography on your route and save electrical assistance for the uphill sections. It also notes when you’re approaching your destination and attempts to cover the last couple of miles on electric power alone.
    A Four Would Be Better
The 3-series hybrid—that still seems a bit weird to type—will set you back $50,195 when it goes on sale this fall. That’s $6500 more than the base 2013 335i, which can be fitted with a six-speed manual to boot. With the extra coin required, we’d have thought better economy numbers would be part of the deal. BMW could have achieved them by instead coupling its turbocharged four to the hybrid technology.
But given the modest sales of hybrids not named Prius, BMW chose to invest in only one powertrain and it needed one that would work well in all three of its sedans. As a result, while this car is very refined, it lacks the flashy mpg ratings that induce feverish excitement in American hybrid buyers. Efficiency fans may want to hold out for the forthcoming diesel 3-series, which is more likely to deliver the higher economy numbers they crave.
