Mercedes were the focus of controversy in Melbourne because of their DRS-operated 'F-duct' speed boost system.
I've been poking around near the car and it's clear how it works.
When the DRS overtaking aid opens on the rear wing, it reveals a hole in the endplates.
That allows the underneath of the front wing, which is at a low pressure, to suck air from there right through the car.

Unless it's banned, the others will probably all have something similar on by Barcelona in May - but it's a very expensive thing for a small gain

It goes down the endplates, along the lower beam wing, through some pipes and ducting in the cockpit, down the front wing pillars, into the front wing and out of a slots on the bottom of the front wing.
That reduces the front downforce of the car, which has two effects.
It cuts drag, therefore boosting straight-line speed even more than it already would be just by opening the DRS flap.
But it also makes the car more balanced front to rear in high-speed corners in practice and qualifying, where DRS use is free, because the main problem with F1 cars in fast corners is they have too much front downforce.
They'll have a restrictor in there that they can change from track to track depending on need.
Unless it's banned, the others will probably all have something similar on by Barcelona in May - but it's a very expensive thing for a small gain.

Mercedes' rear wing caused quite a stir during the Australian Grand Prix weekend
It means new rear-wing endplates and tubes in the beam wing and through the car, plus lots of new rear-wing endplates. You're looking at Ł150-200,000 to develop it.
And all the others will have to move their DRS actuation system. On the Mercedes it's in the rear-wing endplates, which is what allows them to have the hole, which otherwise is illegal. The others all have theirs in the centre of the wing.
I'm not sure they get that much advantage out of it.
Their straight line speed is not as good as the McLaren, which has the same engine and the car is not as consistent.
If it did really work well you might get 0.1-0.2secs a lap, which is a lot of time, but how much engineering has gone in to get that to work, and is it always helping you?
Those are the questions that will be asked.

Znaci, sistem je banja u kvalama i pri preticanju.
    Kad je DRS zatvoren, voda.

    BBC - Andrew Benson | 13:00 UK time, Monday, 19 March 2012

There are, it turns out, two Kimi Raikkonens.
The public face of the 2007 world champion, who has returned to Formula 1 this seasonafter two years in rallying, is of a monosyllabic, monotone, unsmiling figure, energised only the moment he steps into a racing car.
The one who emerges in private is very different - a talkative, jocular man, who can happily sit and shoot the breeze like anyone else.

As Lotus trackside operations director,Alan Permanehas worked closely with Raikkonen since he joined the team last November.

The 32-year-old Finn, Permane says, "is happy to sit and talk, not only about technical stuff, but laughing and joking and talking rubbish with his engineers about all sorts of stuff".
He is just not interested in any of his dealings with the media and, unlike his rivals, doesn't bother to hide it.
Permane worked with Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso through the title-winning years with the team formerly known as both Benetton and Renault. He has been impressed with Raikkonen from the start.
Raikkonen first drove one of the team's cars at the Ricardo Tormo circuit in Valencia in late January. Straightaway the team knew they had something special.
He had not driven an F1 car since the 2009 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, and had no experience of the Pirelli tyres he was using. Yet, after a single installation lap to check the car's systems were working, his first flying lap was within a few 10ths of a second of the fastest lap he would do over the next two days.

The good impressions did not go away.
Permane said, "He has never driven a car with a full load of fuel in it.
"We went from 30-160kg [of fuel load in Valencia] to show him that's the sort of difference you can expect - certainly from qualifying to race it's even bigger than that.
"We calculate the lap time difference the fuel load will make and his first lap was absolutely spot on that difference. That is impressive."
After that, Raikkonen did another 20 laps, each one exactly 0.1secs slower than the last - the lap time lost by tyre degradation.

    Znaci...

Twitter BBC Sport's chief F1 writer Andrew Benson in Melbourne
"That's a fascinating remark from Michael Schumacher. Team radio has just broadcasted him saying that the initial pick-up of his DRS overtaking aid is 'too aggressive'.

BBC F1 technical analyst Gary Anderson
"What Michael is trying to say when he talks about an aggressive rear wing is that when you open the [DRS] flap the airflow separates and there's a big drag reduction. When he closes the flap, the airflow wasn't re-attaching as consistently as it should. It looks like the rear wheels locked suddenly, which could be the tyres going away on the long run, or it could be the airflow not re-attaching in time."
