THE British Grand Prix and every other European F1 race could be dropped from the calendar because of petrol prices for racing cars.
The F1 teams are meeting today to decide whether to race only in countries with cheap fuel such as Bahrain, China and Canada.
The teams have told the FIA that with petrol now costing Ł6 a gallon and their cars doing only four miles to the gallon, they cannot afford to race in Europe.
“Our fuel bill for a weekend of practice, qualifying and racing with two cars is Ł1,200, unless the driver crashes and saves us a lot of laps,” said one team official. “There are eight European races, so that is nearly Ł10,000 on petrol.
“We wanted a fuel subsidy from Bernie Ecclestone but he is now talking to countries like the US, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and Qatar about staging races where we can fill up for about Ł3.”
Ecclestone was not available yesterday as he was believed to be in Kuwait talking about an event. The teams meet today and want the fuel subsidy paid annually from this season.
