Schumacher admitted that the team tried the super soft tyres early in the day, but he refuted suggestions that his quickest lap was set on a low-fuel run.
"We were focusing on long runs yesterday, and that was the same today," Schumacher told reporters in Jerez. "But today we tried the very soft tyres.
"Obviously that makes us a little bit quicker than some teams that have not tried those tyres. Saying this, we were not the only ones using them. They are available to everybody.
"If I'm correct, my fastest lap came at the start of a 10 lap run. I don't know if that is short - you may interpret it how you want."
The 42-year-old also played down the significance of his team-mate's mood after Rosberg had a difficult first day at the test yesterday.
"I think Nico didn't have a good day, the car wasn't running properly," he added. "I'm sure if he runs the car on the last day he will be more happy.
"I'm not too worried. I'm on the inside, I understand exactly what is going on. I wasn't worried in Valencia, and I'm not worried so far here.
"We had a satisfying day. We had good reliability, and it's important for us to do the mileage and to get the car reliable."

NH: I think it means the car is not s**t, but not a lot more than that. Most guys here, if they take the fuel out and put very soft tyres on all day, nearly anybody could be in front. But it is not a bad sign.

Nico Rosberg believes Mercedes is now much closer to solving the issues that held it back early in winter testing, having put the team on top again in today's Catalunya test.

After an ominously quiet start to Mercedes' winter, Michael Schumacher jumped to the head of the order on the second day at Jerez last week, a performance that Rosberg repeated with a rapid late lap near the end of today's session.

The German warned that Mercedes still had plenty to do, but said recent gains had boosted his confidence in the W02.

"For sure we still have some problems, but it's going in the right direction," Rosberg said. "Today we learned a lot and made some progress, so things are improving."

Mercedes had reiterated during its initial struggles that it had begun testing with a car some way off its definitive 2011 specification and would only show its true potential at the season-opener, a point Rosberg underlined today.

"It was expected that we would be struggling in the winter because the car is built mainly to test reliability and it's not there for performance," he said.

"The performance is going to come in the next few weeks and then we have to wait and see where we are."

Although the first half of today's test was affected by rain, Rosberg still felt Mercedes had managed to get plenty done.

"Generally it's been good, even on the intermediates we learned a lot and then in the afternoon on the long runs we made some good progress in the end," he said.

"We definitely learned some new things again about some new aero parts and things like that, so it's been a good day and it's all going in the right direction."

They definitely aren't hiding anything. The car looks pretty bad on track – lacking front end grip and forcing the drivers to work hard to get it to do what they want, which is never a good way to carry speed through corners.

The car seems to be something of the order of 1.5 seconds off the pace, which is definitely a big problem. Ross Brawn has said that the plan was to launch a "plain" car for the start of testing and then do a big upgrade for Bahrain, but you can be sure that the plan wasn't to run a car with such plain performance.

The team has been switching between two versions of its front wing – one with two slots cut in the main element – suggesting aero problems. Our technical consultant, Gary Anderson, firmly believes that a two-element front wing is more unstable than a three-element one, and it's possible that this is to deal with airflow separation problems.

Nico Rosberg was at his fastest running this wing yesterday, so we will probably see a new front wing based on that concept. There will also be new exhausts – Brawn has promised an innovative design – as well as other aerodynamic revisions. Although it would be an exaggeration to call it a B-spec car, this will be a major package and bolting it on at the eve of the first race is not something you would do in an ideal world, as it will change the characteristics of the car. Also, new exhausts can lead to overheating problems.

This is not the kind of schedule you would design, unless forced to by circumstances, so the team has a lot of work to do.
