Michael Schumacher says he thinks it will be possible to win races in 2011 despite failing to appear on the podium in his disappointing comeback to the sport in 2010.
The seven-time world champion was comprehensively out-qualified and out-raced by young compatriot and team-mate Nico Rosberg this year. But Schumacher thinks that with a year of teething troubles out of the way, the well funded Mercedes outfit will be in a much better position in 2011.
"We are clearly in a better situation now because of the immense support from Mercedes," Schumacher told Germany's Auto Motor und Sport. "But we cannot presume to think that we will be fighting for the championship. We will make a big leap forward and - if all goes well - win races."
Schumacher added that many of his problems with the car were not experienced by Rosberg and that the issues he encountered were not easily apparent to the public.
"In retrospect, there were things; my floor was burned because of the exhaust being too hot, or the F-duct working in places where it should not. There were many [issues], resulting from the fact that we are in a restructuring phase but we still wanted to go for the title.
"At Spa my F-duct didn't work, but I didn't say anything. At Suzuka it happened again - a problem with my car but not with Nico's. I said to Norbert [Haug] and Ross [Brawn] that it was time for an explanation of the reasons."
Schumacher confirmed that another main cause for his struggles was due to his driving style not suiting the Bridgestone tyre and that in 2011, with Pirelli, he hopes to be more competitive.
"I prefer to speak inside the team, and I am convinced that in 2011 the problems will exist no more. The car was a compromise. With the tyre, it was difficult for me to drive how I wanted to."

Aoooo...pogle ovo:
LONDON, Dec 6 (Reuters) - Red Bull's Mark Webber has disclosed that he raced the last four grands prix of the Formula One season with a broken shoulder and without telling his team he fell off a mountain bike in his native Australia in October.
The 34-year-old, who still has a pin in his leg after breaking the limb and shoulder in a cycling accident in Tasmania in November 2008, revealed the latest incident in a book 'Up Front -- 2010, a season to remember' published in Australia.
"I was riding with a great friend of mine. Suddenly he crashed right in front of me and I had nowhere to go but straight through the ears of the horse (over the handlebars)," Webber explained in the book.
"I suffered what they call a 'skier's fracture' to my right shoulder."
Webber was leading the championship at the time but his form then dipped and he ended up third overall with the title going to 23-year-old German team mate Sebastian Vettel.
Red Bull team boss Christian Horner, who accepted an award on his absent driver's behalf in London on Monday, was disappointed.
"I didn't even know about the book let alone the shoulder," the Daily Telegraph website quoted him as saying at the British Racing Drivers' Club (BRDC) function.
"It is obviously disappointing Mark said nothing. It was an injury that did not appear to have any effect on his performance but all the same it would have been nice to know about it.
"Our drivers have an obligation to make sure they are fit. It seems bikes don't agree with Mark so maybe it would be better if he stayed away from them."
I onda:

Mercedes Grand Prix could spring a few surprises next season and be right up there pushing the likes of Red Bull Racing, Ferrari and McLaren, that is the prediction of 1992 Formula One World Champion, Nigel Mansell.
Speaking at the BRDC awards in London this week, Mansell also added that he doesn’t think it can yet be said that Michael Schumacher was wrong to comeback with the ‘Silver Arrows’.
"At the end of 2011 if Michael hasn't won and the team haven't given him the car to demonstrate how good he is and how great he is, then maybe it might have been the wrong decision [to return],” Mansell told ESPNF1.com.
“But I think now he should be back with all the same feelings he had before he left. The development over this winter will give Ross Brawn the time and the team to energize everything they need.
“They have had a couple of showings where the car has demonstrated a better turn of speed. So they could be the joker in the pack next year and do something very special."

Opelov Eco Tec motor od 2013 a DIDI je banovao team orders:
The FIA World Motor Sport Council met in Monaco today and two significant things came out of it. First the WMSC approved the small capacity turbo engine which has been under discussion for some months and second it dropped the controversial rule banning team orders from F1 with effect from 2011 onwards. This follows the unsatisfactory outcome of the hearing into the Ferrari team orders incident in Germany this season.
The FIA statement on the engines said, “The WMSC approved the introduction of a new specification engine from 2013, underlining the FIA’s commitment to improving sustainability and addressing the needs of the automotive industry. Following dialogue with the engine manufacturers and experts in this field, the power units will be four cylinders, 1.6 litre with high pressure gasoline injection up to 500 bar with a maximum of 12,000 rpm.
“The engines will deliver a 35% reduction in fuel consumption and will feature extensive energy management and energy recovery systems, while maintaining current levels of performance. In 2013, five engines will be permitted per driver, but each year after that the limit will be four.”
So from 2014 onwards engines will have to last a minimum of five Grands Prix, as opposed to the two/three race engines now.
As for team orders, the WMSC said, “The article forbidding team orders (39.1) is deleted. Teams will be reminded that any actions liable to bring the sport into disrepute are dealt with under Article 151c of the International Sporting Code and any other relevant provisions.”
There were also some other changes to the regulations including gearbox life, which is extended to five races, rather than four.
A full analysis of the significance of these changes will follow later.
