Michael Schumacher believes Mercedes has reasons to be optimistic about its W01’s potential in Australia after ending the disrupted opening day near the top of the times.
With the opening session at Albert Park punctured by two red flag periods, and the second on-off rain showers, Schumacher was only able to complete 35 laps in total on his first day of driving at the bumpy circuit since 2006.
After his first practice position of 12th appeared to indicate he was running a reasonably heavy fuel load, the seven-time champion vaulted up to a final position of fourth in the dying minutes of the later session despite greasy track conditions – ensuring he finished ahead of team-mate Nico Rosberg in any session for the first time this season.
Afterwards Schumacher was typically reluctant to predict the pecking order at this stage but did admit he was pleased with his own programme, particularly as he felt the team managed to improve the W01’s set-up throughout the day.
"As often on Fridays, the performance is difficult to judge as everybody seemed to be on different programmes,” the four-time Melbourne winner said.

“Having said that, I am quite happy with today's sessions, even if we did not run too much overall.

“My first session was a bit handicapped by red flags, later we faced some rain in the second session.
“But all in all, we learned a lot and we could improve the set up of our car quite reasonably.
“In the end our times were competitive so I think we can look forward to the rest of the weekend."
Having run ahead of his new illustrious stable-mate throughout the season-opening weekend in Bahrain, Rosberg maintained that advantage into opening practice in Melbourne as he finished 1.4s ahead of his fellow German in second place.
He only managed to improve that time by 0.2s in the rain-hit second session, however, and is not yet entirely satisfied with his W01’s set-up.
"The first session was ok this morning and we learnt some good things,” Rosberg said.
“This afternoon was a bit frustrating with the weather interruptions but we were still able to learn a good amount on the tyres which gives us some preparation for tomorrow.
“There are still some set-up issues to look at and improvements to make on the car so we have plenty of work to do overnight."
Speaking to reporters in the paddock later, Rosberg insisted that the team simply hadn’t managed to improve the set-up from first practice, rather than having gone backwards with it, and that he was confident things would improve for Saturday’s running.
“We didn’t really go the wrong way, but we didn’t really manage to improve this time,” he added.
“We know what we need to do and from that point of view it should be alright for tomorrow.
“It’s very difficult to say where we are in terms of general performance at the moment.”

On Friday evening Lewis Hamilton was fined by the Melbourne police for doing burnouts in the streets of Melbourne. The police confirmed a 2010 silver Mercedes sedan was impounded after the incident at 9.15pm.

A McLaren statement came in not much later quoting Hamilton as saying: "This evening, I was driving in an over-exuberant manner and, as a result, was stopped by the police. What I did was silly, and I want to apologise for it."

Michael Schumacher sought clarification from FIA race director Charlie Whiting about driving standards after qualifying in Melbourne - having been left angry that he had been blocked by other drivers.

The Mercedes GP driver was unhappy that his efforts were hit by both Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton getting in his way during various stages of the qualifying.

And he was so upset with the way that Alonso had driven while on a slow down lap at the end of Q3, that he confronted the Spaniard in parc ferme after the session - before seeking out Whiting to discuss the matter further.

"Basically on my last try, I was slowed down by him," explained Schumacher about Alonso. "I asked him whether the team had told him [I was on a quick lap] and he said no.

"In a way it is difficult because he was on his in-lap, and he was worrying about other things than maybe watching the mirror. But saying that, we had this chat yesterday in the drivers' briefing that this should be taken care of, and actually he was one of the main guys asking about it.

"I wanted to know if the team had told him or not, and then I had a conversation with Charlie about it because I wanted to know what are the guidelines here – and whether the rules have changed a little bit to what they used to be. I [told Whiting I] need to know what would you be okay with, and what not."

When asked about Hamilton in Q2, Schumacher added: "I had a similar issue with Lewis, that he was adapting his lap and preparing his lap and blocking me in a way – which is not very nice.

"If you sit behind, you are trying your best, which I am doing at the moment, and then somebody slows you down, it is not very comfortable."

The incident between Alonso and Schumacher comes after several problems over the Australian Grand Prix weekend – where slow cars have got in the way of faster approaching rivals. BMW Sauber's Pedro de la Rosa was reprimanded after the final free practice session for impeding another driver.

After yesterday's free practice, we were not worried because we knew our work had only focused on being ready for Sunday's race. Anything can happen here and we must be ready for any eventuality. Cuj, nas GAZDA se tada borio za pobjedu i za sampionat, a nije cruisao po stazi, tako da ti prica ne pije vodu.

Red Bul ocekivano na celu,Alonso masina,Masa pojma nema,a NAJVECI vec na drugoj trci i posle 3 godine NEvozenja izjednacen sa Rozbergom,koja MASINA!
Od 5-6 trke Mercedes ce se boriti za podijum i pobjede,mada je progres u odnosu na proslu trku vec sada vidljiv

Siguran sam da bi bio cetvrti da nije bilo onog smrada.
