Graphics card vendors to start selling new generation GPUs from AMD in November
Monica Chen, Taipei; Joseph Tsai, DIGITIMES [Thursday 12 August 2010]
Graphics card vendors are expected to start selling AMD's next-generation GPU (Southern Islands) in November with AMD to officially announce the series in October, according to sources from graphics card players.
To defend its market share, AMD plans to cut prices for its ATI Radeon HD 5000-series GPUs in the near future. The action also serves as preparation for the upcoming Southern Islands GPUs, the sources noted.
AMD originally planned to have its next-generation GPUs using 32nm process and codenamed the chips Northern Islands, but Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) skipped its 32nm R&D for GPUs and advanced directly to 28nm R&D. In response AMD adjusted its plans and decided to continue adopting a 40nm process, while changing the product's codename to Southern Islands, the sources explained.
AMD declined the opportunity to respond to this report saying it cannot comment on unannounced products.

AMD Catalyst 10.8 released
http://tech.icrontic.com/news/amd-ca...10-8-released/

ATI Introduces $3500 FirePro V9800 Graphics Card.
http://hothardware.com/News/ATI-Intr...Graphics-Card/The FirePro V9800 offers similar features found in the V8800 we reviewed in April : Cypress GPU, 1600 stream processors, 147.2 GB/s memory bandwidth. The difference here is a larger, 4GB memory buffer, six DisplayPort connections, and a higher price tag. At $3,499, it costs over twice as much as the V8800, targeting workstation users that demand the highest level of performance possible with no compromises.

AMD VP explains why ATI brand was dropped
Writing in his blog, AMD Corporate Brand Vice President John Volkmann tried to explain why AMD chose to drop the ATI brand, but we can’t say that the explanation was of much help.
Basically Volkmann stressed that the decision was made after numerous surveys showed that most consumers have absolutely no idea what they are buying, making certain brands redundant. While this might be true of people who buy their gear at Wal-Mart, enthusiasts pay a bit more attention and some of them are fanatical about what they buy.
“Time and again, our research confirms that the average PC buyer is unaware of what processors are under the hood of their PC. This is why we invest very little in ‘brand-building’ with the mainstream market segment,” he wrote.
However, Volkmann pointed out that the Radeon brand wasn’t going anywhere and that it was a very strong brand by any measure. Basically it turned out that Radeon was a stronger brand than ATI, and the same apparently goes for AMD, hence the company chose to combine the two and drop the ATI badge. Sentimental value was obviously not a consideration, just cold numbers.
We’re still saddened by the decision to move away from the legendary red brand. We believe it could have been transformed into an entirely different brand, aimed mainly at the enthusiast market, but that’s a different story altogether.

Radeon HD 6700 Series rumored to use 256-bit memory bus
Might make sense
According to a post over at Donanimhaber.com, AMD's upcoming Radeon HD 6700 Series graphics cards might use a 256-bit memory interface.
The 256-bit memory interface comes as a surprise considering that the current Radeon HD 5700 Series features a 128-bit memory interface, but it could make sense as all reports indicate that the upcoming HD 6000 series graphics cards are all about evolution.
This also could be the way to keep the available Radeon HD 5700 Series alive as AMD can drop its price and keep selling it until they clear out the stock as thanks to the "evolution" and the wider memory interface, Radeon HD 6700 Series should end up significantly faster.
Judging by some early benchmarks, Radeon HD 6000 cards will offer a significant performance boost over the current generation, but bear in mind that they still stick to the same 40nm production process. Using a wider memory bus could be one of the ways of boosting performance while using the same production process, but it would also increase production costs.

AMD's upcoming Cayman XT pixellized
Still features ATI branding
The guys from Chiphell.com managed to score what is claimed to be a working prototype of AMD's Radeon HD 6000 Series graphics card codenamed "Cayman XT." According to the info, the pixellized card is the XT version of the Cayman chip and should be the Radeon HD 6x70 series card, at least if AMD sticks to the rumoured naming scheme.
Unfortunately, the picture doesn't reveal much solid information rather than some speculaction that the card might be as long as the Radeon HD 5870, should have CrossFireX support, and has two DVI ports, an HDMI port and two mini-DisplayPort connectors. The post didn't reveal any other specifications, except that we are looking at a GPU made on TSMC's 40nm manufacturing process.
An interesting detail is that the prototype still proudly carries the ATI brand sticker, something that AMD will probably throw away soon enough. In any case, it looks like more info regarding AMD's Radeon HD 6000 Series family has finally started to trickle out, which means that we'll see more surface very soon.

AMD's upcoming Caicos graphics card
Radeon HD 6300 Series
Following the pictures of AMD's upcoming Cayman XT board, Chiphell.com has also posted pictures and the GPU-Z screenshot of the upcoming Caicos card as well. AMD's upcoming entry-level desktop series, codenamed "Caicos," should be the GPU that will be soldered to AMD's Radeon HD 6300 Series and should be the successor to the Radeon HD 5400 Series.
The qualification sample that was pixellized features a low-profile, single-slot, passive cooled design. The GPU-Z screenshot isn't as revealing as well but list the GPU identifier as the 6779 which does point out to "Caicos", at least according to the driver name leak that happened a few weeks ago.
You can still take the specs with a grain of salt as it is possible that they might change, but for now, the card works at 650MHz for the core and 800MHz for 1GB of DDR3 memory with 25.6GB/s memory bandwidth. The card has HDMI and DVI outputs.

AMD's upcoming "Barts" XT card pixellized
256-bit memory interface
Right after Cayman and Caicos prototype pictures surfaced, the guys from ChipHell Forums also posted a picture of a prototype Barts XT card, which should end up designated as Radeon HD 6770 unless AMD decides to change its naming scheme at the last minute.
Bear in mind that we are still looking at prototype cards and that the actual retail samples might end up to be a bit different as we are pretty sure that it won't show up in the market with the pixellized cooler. Although the specs are still unknown, it can be seen from pictures that the card need two 6-pin PCI-Express power connectors, has singe Crossfire connector and has two DVI, an HDMI and two mini-DisplayPort connectors.
The card should have a 256-bit memory interface and, according to rumours, an 80% to 100% increase in memory bandwidth when compared to the previous generation.

PowerColor Radeon 5770 Single slot Quad CrossfireX review
PowerColor Radeon HD 5770 Single Slot in 4-way CrossfireX
PowerColor R5570 Single Slot in 3-way CrossfireXA little while ago PowerColor released a new SKU from the popular Radeon HD 5770 lineup of products; in fact they made an actual single slot version of this card, allowing you to go for multi-GPU setups much easier as it saves a lot of space.
The new cards are clocked at reference speeds as the new single slot coolers obviously have a little less cooling capacity compared to the dual-slot version. Today we'll take a total of four of these cards and see what they'll do setup in multi-GPU-mode, CrossfireX.
See the Radeon HD 5770 as tested today can be purchased for roughly 150 EUR a pop these days, three of them with one Gigabyte of graphics memory each could open up a can of performance, easily beating the most high-end CPUs. But as always one question arises: how does CrossFireX with the Radeon HD 5770 really scale anno September 2010? Well, to find that out we requested four of these cards from Power Color to see what happens.

http://www.chiphell.com/thread-123528-1-1.htmlChinese tech site Chiphell has leaked an interesting slide featuring full AMD Barts specs and the numbers look impressive.
The new Barts series should succeed Juniper-based HD 5770 and HD 5750 boards, but it will deliver a significant performance boost. The biggest difference is the transition to a 256-bit memory bus, which will provide quite a bit more bandwidth than the 128-bit Juniper series. Both boards should feature 1GB of memory, but we’re still not sure about memory clocks, as we’re getting some mixed information.
Barts XT will feature 12 SIMDs, 960 shaders, 48 texture units and 32 ROPs. For comparison, Juniper XT packs 800 shaders and 40 texture units, so Barts will have 20 percent more of everything. The core should end up clocked at 850MHz and the TDP is rated at over 150W, which is quite a bit more than the HD 5770.
Barts PRO packs 800 shaders, 40 texture units and 32 ROPs, much like the current Juniper XT, but it will also have a wider 256-bus. It will be clocked between 700MHz and 725MHz and its TDP should end up below 150W.
AMD is pitting both boards against Nvidia’s GTX 460: Barts PRO will take on the 768MB version of Nvidia’s GTX 460, while Barts XT should fight the 1GB version. Judging by the spec, Barts boards should be able to outperform the GTX 460 and we wouldn't be surprised if they match HD 5830 or even 5850 performance in some scenarios, thanks to higher clocks and the 256-bit bus.

Radeon HD 6870 pictured
The Radeon HD 6870 takes up two slots and has a 256-bit memory interface, 1GB of GDDR5 VRAM, the third-generation Unified Video Decoder (UVD), AMD HD3D technology for 3D gaming, CrossFireX support, and the Eyefinity multi-monitor solution. The card also provides no less than five display outputs - two DVI, one HDMI 1.4, two mini DisplayPort 1.2, so it seems capable of running five monitors simultaneously. Pretty sweet
