Mercedes GP is adamant that Michael Schumacher continues to be as good as he always was - despite a less than stellar return to Formula 1 so far.
Schumacher has been outqualified and outraced by team-mate Nico Rosberg in the first two races of the year – and spent much of last weekend's Australian Grand Prix fighting near the back of the field with youngster Jaime Alguersuari.
But despite on paper having not delivered the kind of results that some expected, Mercedes-Benz motorsport boss Norbert Haug is sure that Schumacher retains the same magic that drove him to seven world titles.
"Absolutely," Haug told AUTOSPORT when asked if he believed Schumacher was as good as ever. "He has got it. And we have one of the strongest driver pairings in the field.
"It is up to us to improve the package further. It is fair to say we improved it on this track compared to Bahrain, which was a completely different story."
Haug thinks that the results so far have not shown the true picture of how Schumacher is comparing to Rosberg – especially after he was baulked by Alonso in qualifying in Melbourne, and his performance in the race in Australia was compromised by car damage that was only discovered after the event.
Haug also believes that Schumacher's critics should get off his back – because he took on the challenge of returning to F1 rather than shying away from it for fear of failure.
"If you look Saturday morning, if you look at the times, if you look at qualifying Michael was handicapped behind Alonso, and it is fair to say it was a very comparable lap to Nico," explained Haug. "And I think Nico is one of the highest rated guys of the current generation, with four years experience.
"Michael is missing three years of these fours years, but he is here to be competitive. And he could sit on his sofa saying, 'nobody won more than I did', but this is his passion.
"He is a more relaxed guy than ever, he has fun, he is a very good team member, team player – the two guys, you see it in press conferences, they have fun with each other and make jokes with each – but still very focused."

hmmm na osnovu cega ? pa vec na prvoj trci pokazao je da moze biti na nivou Rozberga, a stv sa sporijim bolidom od pola sek(mozda i vise) po krugu u odnosu na Mcl RB i ferari ne moze nista pa da mu je cak noris umjesto difuzora. u njegove vozacke sposobnosti i pripremu ne treba sumnjati cim se vratio vjeruje da moze da pobijedi, a ukoliko bude imao bolid i ucinice to , puno toga treba da se poklopi da bi se pobijedili brzi bolidi, Batonu svaka cast ali imao je nesport MNOGO srece, mogao je nakon one prve krivina poslije prelaska na gume za suvo da ostane u pijesku i tu bi bio kraj, ovako eto ga heroj ekipe!Quote:

Michael Schumacher will get more satisfaction in his comeback year from helping Mercedes get to the front of the field, than he would have done had he returned to Formula 1 with an all-conquering car.
That is the view of the seven-time champion’s team boss and long-time colleague Ross Brawn, who reckons the German will achieve his ambition of enjoying his F1 return by playing a key role in improving his new team’s early-season form after it trailed its chief rivals in the first two rounds.
“I’m a keen fisherman as you know and there’s this story about a guy who turned up at a trout stream and just started catching massive fish every cast and realised it wasn’t enjoyable anymore,” Brawn said in Melbourne.
“The fun comes in the challenge; the fun comes in achieving something.
“And I think if Michael just stepped into a car that was perfect and he ran away with the championship, I don’t think he would enjoy himself as much as he’s going to enjoy himself helping us put the team where we need to be.”
After a huge build-up to his F1 return prior to the season, the now 41-year-old Schumacher has yet to scale the kind of stand-out performance heights he achieved during the majority of the first record-breaking stint on the grid.
Brawn, however, believes Schumacher made a first big step forward in performance last weekend in Australia compared with his form at the season-opener in Bahrain, when he trailed Nico Rosberg for the entire weekend.
Speaking ahead of last Sunday’s Melbourne race in which Schumacher finished a difficult afternoon in 10th place, Brawn said the German’s performances to date had been in line with his expectations given his long lay-off.
“I’m not surprised by Michael’s performance because I think it takes a few races to get in [the swing of things] and I’ve seen a big step already from Bahrain to here [Melbourne],” Brawn said.
“And the difficulty is without testing, he’s having to develop at the race track.”
With Schumacher having been overshadowed by Rosberg in terms of on-track results so far, Brawn admitted he was delighted by the form of the team’s younger German star.
“What’s been a very pleasant surprise I think is the speed of Nico,” he said.
“We thought he was quick – that’s why we signed him – but I’m really pleased with the way Nico’s performing and he’s always working with the team.
“So I’m really pleased with both of them. I don’t have any issues at all.”
