Default Jobs For English Speaking People in Montenegro

As more and more English/American speaking people come to live in Montenegro, I am curious to hear their experiences with regards to finding employment here? Anyone knows someone who did it?

Anyone tried? What positions are available? Obstacles?

As for the locals, do you or your company need people with perfect English language skills: teachers, interpreters, translators, tourist guides, real estate agents etc. etc.

I know a few people who came from USA to teach here as Fullbright Scholars. They teach English language and literature at University of Montenegro and Mediteran University. But they are here only for one school year like from August to end of June. They are not so happy with their departments because people around them dont speak english very well even a chairman of the english department which is ridiculous.
Its hard for english speaking people to live and work here because people in general dont know english that well so it isnt that easy to make friends and decide to stay longer.

I think it depends where in monty you are, around the tourist areas far more locals speak english, the youngsters under 25 seem fluent in english.
Brits & Americans have to make some effort to learn the language, even if they learnt just 1 word a week,in a year they'll know 52 words!
With regards to real estate agents, advocates, accountants, architechts,i've found most of them speak english & if they don't, usually there's a way to get translation done, but at cost.

Always provides a laugh for the locals when you try & order something in a cafe or restaurant in their language!

The funniest thing i've seen is 2 locals in cars who nearly had a head on crash in tivat, much to my amazement they swore at each other in english, can't repeat it here, but the worst swear words!

    Ta...

If I go to live and work in America, and I do not know english language, can I find work? If you go to live and work in some country, you probably first have to know is to speak their language.

Well I'd love to agree with you but, unfortunately, not all languages are created equal. English is de facto language of the world business and sometimes only immaculate English skills are acceptable.

East Asian countries realised that long ago and there are tens of thousands native English speakers working as English teachers. There is hardly anything worse than having for example a National Tourist Organisation site www.visit-montenegro.com with texts in less than perfect English. Just reveals lack of professionalism.

For example, in the U.S. are Spanish people rebelled and sought to open a college in Spanish. Americans are allowed to make such a faculty. When people are finished the school and seeking for work, American employers they asked a simple question, "Do you know to speak english? If you don't speak english, how can I give you a job, because my staff does not speaks spanish?"
Everything is clear, if you want to work, you have to speak the language of the country where you live.
I know that our language is not "popular" as an English, but if you want to work you need to know the basic language communication, and English you can use it in the part of the job for what you need it.

I hear you. I'm not talking about English coming in and taking "ordinary" jobs from Montenegrins. Some jobs, however, can very rarely be done properly by someone who doesn't speak perfect English and isn't coming from that culture.

To take your example, say there is a position in Washington D.C. to promote American official views on CdM forums. Do you think many Americans would be able to do the job?

You consider knowing 52 words to be a milestone success in learning Montenegrin?

    No hard feelings!

It's not a milestone, but I'd rather have people that learn at least 52 words a year, then living here for a couple of years and they didn't learn a single one, and I met some people like that...

It's not a milestone learning 52 words a year, but at least it shows willingness to learn, ableit slowly a foreign language.
Your language is a difficult one to learn,in 2 years basic sentances could be strung together, which is more than can be said about brits living in spain for 15 years & not knowing a single word!

Well, I read all the information which is provided with you and I appreciate to you. This is the good opportunity for those people who have strong accent to speak the English. I think many people can avail opportunity from this and thanks for sharing the information with us.

You can't really compare English to our language or Spanish. You need to know more Montenegrian to get a job here than to know English in US, people can get a job in US without knowing English so good, just few words, and they can do it, of course not some good job, also it is important how you do your job.

As for finding a job here, i think you can find a job, but what you will need is friends that can speak Montenegrian to help you out a little bit at start, you could give personal classes, try at some hotel, in the end if you are specialized in something, than you don't need much of language to finish that job, unless, you have to talk to your customers in Montenegrian.

"If I go to live and work in America, and I do not know english language, can I find work? If you go to live and work in some country, you probably first have to know is to speak their language."

I know some people who went to US , and they didn't know English at all, they still found a job, managed to live there, and now they have a life there, so that is not a huge factor, but that were older times, I would say its different now and harder to do it, but still, when you have someone that you can communicate to, like a friend, you can find a job much more easier , if you are on your own, and don't know the language, it is going to be very hard.

I think that at US embassy they hire US citizens to work there, maybe you should try there !

    Good luck

P.S You won't be finding so much neighborhood's that talk English, but surely at work, now its for a lot of people required to have some basic knowledge of English, I'm talking about some medium level jobs, but if you are not specialized in something, will be very hard to find a job here.

If your English skills are good, you may be able to find work on the Internet. You don't need to work in Montenegro to live in Montenegro.

The only reason you really need to work here is to get the employment permit so that you can legally stay here more than 180 days a year. If you are a local, that isn't a problem.

It doesn't seem so hard to me. I know a lot of locals who speak conversational English.

I often toy with the idea of living/working in MNE for 6 months, but unless I was on a 'western salary' I wouldnt do it. My MNE language skills are very good nonetheless.

In terms of employment for those with limited/no MNE language, I think the only avenue would be tourist related employment. Eg in a hostel, fancy hotel, casino etc

Sorry for hijacking your thread, but I have to!

Really... Only thing I'm wondering is what made you come to Montenegro in first place? Any of you that is.
You do realize that even if you find a job here its not gonna be paid remotely close to what you (probably) are used to be paid?

Seriously tho, can any of you answer me what triggered in you that made you come here? Insanely good real estate prices (read: piss easy to earn some big cash if you had enough to invest) back prior to 2008 or?
    Imagination is everything.

100$ a week is roughly an average salary. Overtime is not paid. Dont expect people around you to speak english good at all, unless you work for some foreign company. Idk who is crazy to come here when people are trying to get out.

In marketing terms you can think of "niche market", then there is a term "sea change" etc. etc. I don't think a sane German worker would come work for 500 Euros a month if he/she is at a stage in his life when he wants to form a family but "empty nesters" for example are a different story. People who would come to enjoy a slower pace of life, reasonably well situated in life and wanting to slow down and smell the roses because they deserved it. Another potential group might be wifes of Montenegrin emigrants who want to come back. Then second generation migrants - children of our migrants that want to come back...People and their lives usually move in all sorts of directions.
