The Takumi system of master craftspeople
Influenced by the success of the Takumi System at the Lexus Tahara plant, three years ago the Miyata plant adopted its own version called "Takumi Activities." In this approach, a small group of master craftspeople (known as "takumi", or artisans) are responsible for passing along their skills to other team members in a systematic way, through individually tailored training programs. At the plant, the takumi are known more formally as Lexus Technical Experts, and, at present, there are only 19 of them among the 7700 employees who work at this massive facility. The Lexus Technical Experts not only devise the standardized procedures that keep the assembly lines running smoothly, but are also responsible for training other technicians in their areas of expertise. All of the plant's workers are continually working to improve their skills and reach the level of takumi.
The stitching dojo
To see an example of the Miyata plant's takumi in action, we visited the specially built dojo (training facility) for stitching. The new Lexus ES features a unique design element - real stitching that runs along the top of the instrument panel upholstery. The stitching work is a time-consuming process, but it adds a warm, craftsmanlike touch that contrasts with the high-tech feel of the panel's gauges. But as a luxury design feature it works only as long as it's done perfectly. So the production goal is to accomplish flawless stitching every time.
Lexus sets high standards for the craftsmen behind the interior of the ES350. Automotive News reports those responsible for stitching the leather on the sedan's instrument panel must first pass a simple test. Given a blank piece of paper, the applicants must construct an origami cat's head. No big deal, right? Not exactly. Lexus makes each worker fold the piece using one hand, whichever one happens to be their non-dominant. As if that weren't difficult enough, they have to do it in under 90 seconds.
That kind of manual dexterity is tricky to master. According to Automotive News, it can take years to become a Takumi, but the level of control is important for work typically relegated to mechanized hands.
1. To ensure that the pistons are firing smoothly, the 'Engine Assembly' Takumi supervises a test where a Martini glass, filled to the rim with a pink liquid, is placed on top of the engine. No amount of liquid is permitted to spill out of the glass, and none does.
2. The 'Paint' Takumi issues a 'hue' test to each paint worker, which involves correctly placing subtle shades of the same colour in the right order, from darkest to lightest. Tests like these are part of a stringent skills qualification audit that must be passed every four months.
3. In order to qualify as a stitching craftsman working on the Lexus ES dashboard, a Takumi must pass a unique test - fold a perfectly constructed origami cat, using only the non-dominant hand, within 90 seconds.
4. To the trained ears of the Takumi in charge of engine assembly, a Lexus engine produces a sophisticated symphony of 20 different sounds, which must be finely tuned. Similar to the conductor of an orchestra, he knows that the crankshaft, pistons and camshaft are working when all sounds hum in perfect harmony.
5. To keep the 'Vehicle Body' team on its toes, the Takumi sneaks a body that is below standard onto the production line every day. Not one has ever slipped past his team

Do nestašice je došlo nakon eksplozije u čeličani kojom upravlja jedna od njenih podružnica.
Eksplozija u čeličani Aiki Stil ograničila je proizvodnju čeličnih delova, što može uticati na proizvodnju najvećeg svetskog prodavca automobile, koji oko 40 odsto svoje globalne proizvodnje realizuje u Japanu, izveštava agencija Rojters.
